Sea of Thieves from Rare Ltd. is a multiplayer game, but it is different from most of the other multiplayer games out there. First of all, it’s not really a shooter, even though shooting can happen in the course of the game. They call it an “epic multiplayer adventure game”, and it certainly is. It is set in a sprawling world that is shared by the entire player base.
What Is the Game?
E3 was the big debut of the game, and the demonstration showed off the beauty of the cartoonish graphics, as well as some of the gameplay mechanics. Even though we know quite a bit about the game, there is still much more that we don’t know.
As you might imagine from the name, Sea of Thieves is all about living the pirate life. Of course, since this is a multiplayer open world, you can pretty much live out whatever type of pirate life you and your friends might want. Your friends, or your crew in this case, are able to interact with one another as you sail the seas.
Your crew has to work well together. You need to know how to steer the ship, raise and lower the sails, and you really need to communicate if you want to get things done and have a good time. If you don’t know what the others are doing, and they don’t know what you are going, you might just find that your ship spins in circles!
You won’t always be on the ship though. There are plenty of islands around the area that you can visit and explore. The developers have said that they want to balance the gameplay between land and sea, so everyone will find something to enjoy. There may be other areas as well, but the developers are releasing information very slowly and very controlled. We know that you can sail, fight, drink digital booze, and more.
They are very adamant that they want to provide players with the pirate experience that they want, so you can be sure there will be plenty of interesting things to see and do. Now, everyone just has to try to wait patiently until this game finally releases.
For example, whenever you see another ship on the horizon, you will know that it is another player. Anything could happen. You might pull up alongside the other ship and become friends with the crew. Or, you might do as pirates often do and attack the ship. Your sailing vessel is outfitted with cannons, but you need to make sure the boat is angled properly to get good shots. This means talking with the other people on the boat. You will all need to have microphones and use them.
It has the potential to be a substantial amount of fun. It’s an experience where anything can happen, and in that respect, it has a number of parallels to tabletop roleplaying games. The only difference is that people are at their own homes, and there isn’t a dungeon master. You can just go out in the world and do anything that you like. It sounds like a load of fun, and there is sure to be plenty of pillaging and plundering happening once the game releases.
Who Should Buy This Game?
When you are making the decision of whether you are going to buy a game or not, you have to think about what it is that you want from the game and what that game delivers. That’s what everyone does when they are making their gaming purchase decisions.
This is going to be a multiplayer only game. When you log on, there will be other real people playing the game, and that means you may have to deal with people that you don’t know. For many players, this is a huge part of the fun. You can make new friends and add people to your crew, or you can start a rivalry with another gang of pirates.
Sea of Thieves is on Windows, as well as the Xbox One. If you have some friends who like to play online games, then this could be a perfect game that each of you could get and then play together in this persistent online world. If you’ve always wanted to live a pirate’s life like Jack Sparrow, and you want to drink up all of that digital rum, make sure this game is on your list of must haves.
